LOCAL SCHOOLCHILDREN TAKE THE TASTE TEST AT MAYNARD
Children from Grindleford Primary School descended on Peak District hotel and restaurant, The Maynard, on Wednesday 18 November. The children were creating their own Christmas puddings, following a new recipe specially created for this year, by The Maynards award-winning head chef, Ben Hickinson. The Maynard was hosting the event and providing all the Christmas pudding ingredients free of charge, serving the children an award-winning complimentary lunch in the hotels ballroom. The Christmas puddings made with the childrens own fair hands will soon go on sale in the local community to raise much-needed funds for the school.
As a further special treat this year, Ben Hickinson will set the children a challenge. They will be asked to identify ingredients by taste, smell, colour and texture, teaching them in the process where the ingredients come from and why the best, freshest ingredients are needed to make the perfect Christmas pud.
Ben said: Were all guilty of not knowing enough about where our food comes from, so were trying to educate the children about the food chain and how to make fantastic food by letting them get their hands dirty and learn by real life experience. Far too much of our food nowadays is processed and we advocate only the highest quality, freshest possible ingredients at The Maynard. We source locally wherever possible and we think its important that the children know that all food is not the same.
In the morning, around 30 junior pupils arrived at The Maynard to prepare their Christmas puddings under the watchful eye of The Maynards team of chefs. At lunch time, the children were be joined by around 20 infants, aged up to 6 years old, who will then have their chance to make Christmas puddings in the afternoon.
