Paul’s Cavendish Cancer Care trek
16th November 2009
Paul returned from Kathmandu recently after completing a three week trek involving a climb of 5,600m (18,370ft) to Everest base camp, passing through some of the most breathtaking landscapes on earth. Paul is accustomed to beautiful settings being based in the Peak District, but The Himalayan views even surpassed Pauls favourite local view from Higger Tor.
The luxury venues he manages on a daily basis couldnt be further removed from the conditions and places he visited on his exhausting expedition, all of which was captured on the keen amateur photographers camera. Paul funded the charitable trip himself and was backed by the family firm Fretwell-Downing, who sponsored some of the kit required for the expedition. His efforts have so far raised hundreds of pounds for the Sheffield based Cavendish Cancer charity with his www.justgiving.com/pauldowningbasecamp page still online and in need of some further support, now he has successfully completed the task in hand.
The lifestyle changes I made to prepare for the trip are ongoing and Im reaping the benefits of being healthier in general. There were of course things I missed while away, obviously my little boy Kai, my family, and my usual walking partner George the Labrador . Despite all my training it wasnt easy. Some of the accommodation and meals were truly awful. I couldnt help but think about and miss the surroundings and fabulous food from The Maynard and Whirlowbrook Hall!
